about palaver strings
Palaver Strings is a Grammy-nominated chamber ensemble and nonprofit music school based in Portland, Maine. Founded in 2014, the ensemble is led by a collective of twelve Co-Artistic Directors who share equally in the artistic vision and organizational leadership of the organization. Palaver operates without a permanent conductor, making all musical decisions collaboratively.
Palaver produces several concert programs per season, performs throughout New England, and maintains a nationally recognized community music education program through the Palaver Music Center (PMC). PMC programs serve families, children, LGBTQ+ individuals, and new parents through innovative music-making experiences including private lessons, group classes, and the nationally recognized Lullaby Project and Lifesongs Project.
In 2024, Palaver received a Grammy nomination for Best Classical Compendium for A Change is Gonna Come (Azica Records), a landmark album featuring tenor Nicholas Phan and music by Black American composers.
